“Two months before my friend took his own life, he had tried to talk to me about what was going on inside his head. I was young and naïve, and I had never experienced this kind of conversation before – I didn’t have any idea what to say to him… I try not to beat myself up about it these days, but I know deep down that I wasn’t there for a friend when he needed me most. We can’t save everyone. But we need to be better at talking about mental health. All of us. We need to know how to support people in getting professional help when they need it. And most importantly, we need to not do what I did and just change the subject.”
